Biologics - Followup

In the previous issue I discussed the four biologics that are now available to treat psoriasis. As I mentioned, a number of people have reported very good results with these, but besides being extremely expensive, they are kind of scary as the long term effects of these treatments are totally unknown.

So I'm sitting at my computer and a commercial comes on the TV saying, "IF you have ever taken Remicade or Enbrel you could be entitled to a cash settlement and reimbursement of medical fees paid." Why? Because these drugs have caused people to develop Lymphoma, Tuberculosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupis, or Gullian-Bar Syndrome. This commercial was from a Law firm who is sueing and apparently winning some large settlements from the drug companies.

I'm not real fond of attorneys, they are a necessary evil, but as these drugs are new, advertised as safe, approved by the FDA, and gaining popularity with Dermatologists, it's pretty scary to see that lawsuits are already taking place because of the severe side effects and the extremely serious and deadly diseases that they appear to be causing.

So, if I were you, I would be extremely hesitant in being a guineau pig for any of these biologics. While they may clear your psoriasis, you may end up with a condition that is much worse and more debilitating than psoriasis.

Kwik Tip #6 - If you have psoriasis of the nail or psoriasis on your hands and feet, try soaking them in a salt water solution, 2-3 times daily.

Followup on my Experiment
As I mentioned last issue, I went off my treatment regimen for about 3 months to see what would happen. I didn't really do this on purpose initially but I had a problem with the item that I recommend in my book, Say Goodbye to Psoriasis. I got the problem resolved last month and now I'm back on the program.
I had reached a level where I was 98-99% cleared. Just a couple small plaques in different areas that were hardly noticeable. While I was off the regimen I decided to do some other testing relating to foods to see what would happen. In the book I give you specific instructions on what foods you should avoid and ones you should consume. I believe what you eat definitely can affect psoriasis and while I don't go to the extremes as some other "experts" in the field such as Dr. Pagano, it boils down to garbage in, garbage out, with the garbage out being psoriasis.
I consumed a number of the foods I recommend to avoid such as chocolate, pizza, alcohol, and others, and sure enough I had some psoriasis plaques start to form on my legs. While I was not using my "amazing discovery" for 3 months, I did pretty much stay with my recommended diet until December, and did not have any reoccurance of the psoriasis until I went totally of the "bandwagon" in December. Gained about 10 lbs too. :-(
On January 2, I went back to the regular treatment and the psoriasis that popped up now is clearing. So yep, you can create psoriasis if you try. It may be that it was dormant, but my skin had returned to being normal (looking) . The plaques that popped up were in areas where I had p before. No new areas developed. I expect those areas that popped up to clear up by the end of the month, as they appear to be going through the normal healing process. Unfortunately they seem to appear faster than they disappear, but following the program definitely works!

Kwik Tip #7 - Do you have a small stubborn plaque that just won't clear? Try using a Liquid bandage on it like Skin Shield, available at Walgreens and other drug stores. Around $4. for 2 small bottles. Great for areas like knuckles - Works Great!

Tanning Beds, Do they Help?

Here in the U.S. it's winter time which is a sign of trouble for most psoriasis sufferers. Unless you are in southern Florida or southern California, you probably aren't getting much sun, and even in those locations, you aren't getting adequate UV rays due to the sun's location. So, should you try a tanning bed and will it help your psoriasis condition?

For most people, doing so will be beneficial. If you don't tan in the sun, you won't tan in a tanning bed. Also, as you probably know, there are two types of tanning beds, UVA and UVB. Most tanning centers use UVA or a combination of UVA and UVB. Your dermatologist may have a light booth featuring the latest Narrowband UVB which is delivering promising results, though more expensive then going to your local tanning center. What's the difference?
